Scorchio! AEMET Issue Yellow Alert for Ibiza Heatwave

  • Temperatures expected of up to 35 degrees into the early part of next week. 

The National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has declared the first yellow alert in 2017 for high temperatures in Ibiza and Formentera for Wednesday 14th June.

Temperatures are expected to soar to a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius during the middle of the day.

The local yellow alert warning is issued alongside a national heatwave prediction – calculated as being a period of at least 3 consecutive days where temperatures are expected to exceed normal averages by at least 10%.

The Meteorological Agency has warned that the heat wave will occur from Thursday, June 15, until Sunday, June 18.

According to AEMET, all the signs are there for the necessary atmospheric conditions to trigger the overheating of the air mass on the interior of the Peninsula.

“This meteorological situation will remain at least until the beginning of next week, with no changes in the air mass, so that the episode of high temperatures will continue, with temperatures that can exceed 35 degrees in many points of the peninsula and in the Balearics.”

Temperatures on the Peninsula are expected to top 40 degrees in most areas, and in the basins of  Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir the temperatures ​​will be even more extreme, with high probability the maximums will exceed 42 degrees.
