- A 50 year old Spanish national died this morning following an incident in which a Van emerging from a field onto the road collided with his scooter.
- The driver of the Van has tested negative for alcohol, but positive for drugs, specifically cocaine and cannabis.
The accident occurred at 5:58a.m. in the Can Cantó neighbourhood of Ibiza Town.
The deceased man has been named as Vicent Serra, a Can Marsoc worker, located on Calle Pere Frances in Ibiza Town. He was on his way to work when the accident happened.
According to information released by Ibiza Town Hall, the motorcycle was travelling on Calle Peralta when a van came onto the road from an open field and collided with the motorcycle.
The rider was transferred to the Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where he died whilst in the emergency department.
The hospital said that the man’s injuries were so grave, that their doctors could not do anything for him.
The 33 year old driver of the Van, also a Spanish national, passed a breathalyser test given by local police, however he was also tested for the consumption of narcotics, and tested positive for both cannabis and cocaine.
The Spanish drug testing protocols do not assess the level of drugs or how recently they were taken, only whether they are evident in a person’s system.
The agents detained the driver of the van on charges of a traffic safety crime.
The fifth motorcyclist fatality of 2018
Since the beginning of the year five motorcyclists have died on the roads of the Pitiüses, four in Ibiza and one in Formentera.
The previous fatal accident occurred in Formentera on Tuesday evening of last week. A young man of 24 years of age and Cuban nationality at kilometer 9 of the La Mola road, a notorious accident blackspot.
The young motorist crossed into the opposite lane and collided head on with a Mitsubishi car driven by a 60 year old man who was unharmed.
Seven traffic accident fatalities in 2018
To date, in 2018 seven people have died in traffic accidents in the Pitiusas.
On May 1, a man of 30 years and Spanish nationality died early in the morning after crashing his motorcycle against a taxi on the road between Ibiza and Santa Eulària, the EI-200.
On January 22 marked the death of another 30-year-old motorist. In this accident no other vehicle was involved.
Just four days later, on January 26, a front-lateral collision between two vehicles at kilometer 8,900 on the Cala Llonga road (EI-100), after the Roca Llisa development, resulted in the death of a 49 year old Dutch driver.
Almost a month later, on February 20, a 73-year-old Ibicenco who was riding a motorcycle died on the road between Sant Antoni and Sant Josep, near the restaurant Soca, after hitting a three-axle truck. The biker joined the road and the truck driver could not do anything to avoid it.
A 75-year-old man from Italy died on the morning of February 21 after being run over by a truck in Jesus when he was at the crossroads between the Cala Llonga road and Cap Martinet avenue.
