Life & Death

Have you ever wondered whether life in Ibiza is advantageous or disadvantageous to your prospects of a long life?

Ibiza Pros

On the one hand, if you are somebody that subscribes to the theory that happiness in itself is good for you physically as well as mentally, we should have a big advantage. After all, people do call our life in the sun as ‘living the dream’.

If you think stress is a contributor to poor health we should score well again. When was the last time you were caught in a rush hour traffic jam, or hand to get to work through tube strikes and snow.

And we also have our diet in our corner. I don’t think you could eat as unhealthily here if you tried, certainly not in terms of processed foods, we just don’t have them on our shelves.

So plenty to feel positive about.

And Ibiza Cons

But over on the other hand then there is the elephant in the room, or perhaps we should say, the elephant on the dancefloor.

I could not think of a population concentration anywhere in the world with such a widespread love of the party lifestyle.

There are certain things, certain naughty things, that have much more prevalent levels of indulgence among the respectable suburban dwellers of Ibiza than most places. And even those who may have taken their foot of the gas in the party people lifestyle will have often taken maximum advantage of Ibiza’s unique offering in younger years. They usually have the battle scars to prove it.

Add to this that Ibiza’s nature in this respect must have actively attracted a far greater proportion of party people than would be represented in a normal cross section of population. We foreign Johnnies take up a significant percentage of the overall population.

Of course there will be many people who will never have danced with the devil in such unhealthy ways, but I know less of them that you’d think. When all is considered, you might expect us to be stepping off this mortal coil at an alarming early age.

So what’s it going to be then eh?

Ibiza Life Expectancy

Well what a surprise. We are not only maintaining the average, but actually running at the front of the pack.

Average Life Expectancy in Years 2017

Britain’s average life expectancy is 80.96 years and it has actually slipped backwards recently. This has caused some head scratching in scientific communities as there is no obvious reason why it would buck the trend of all other developed countries.

It was not so long along that Spain was permanently behind the U.K. The change took place in the late 60s and early 70s. Spain nudged ahead in 1972 and has been there ever since. The average life expectancy in Spain is now 82.83. However, the facts show that Ibiza must be good for you. The average life expectancy for Ibiza is 83.15 years.

Admitted it is not a huge difference to the Spanish Average, but it is a huge difference to the much lower figure I would have readily accepted.

Anyway, think what you could do in those few extra months. See your team win the league. Be there for the birth of your grandchild. Or if the desire took you, you would have time for one last spin in your Ferrari, a puff on a fine Havana, and the pleasure of a naked friend by your side. That has to be worth holding on for.

Ibiza Male & Female Life Expectancy 2017

The always apparent Male to Female expectancy is on a par with those elsewhere. Ibiza women have a life expectancy almost 4 years greater than the men.

But perhaps the most remarkable figure of all is the speed with which our life expectancy has increased.

In just 15 years the average life expectancy of an Ibizan has increased almost 4 years. An amazing number.

When Will You Die?

Statistically the chances are probably a lot smaller than you think, though I did remove those upper age groups where the odds do become rather bleak and I am sure those seniors do not need reminding. I hope that is not too patronising.

It is all intended to be taken with a pinch of salt, these are just numerical averages, but they do have the added interest of applying to Ibiza specifically.

First look up your age group in the left column.

Risk of Death – A

Column A tells you the risk of death before reaching the next age group. So, for example, a 20 year old man has a 0.37% risk of death before reaching 25. years, a 40 year old has a 0.71% change of death before 45 years, etc.

Life Expectancy – B

Column B gives your life expectancy from the entry age of that age group. For example, a 20 year old man has a life expectancy of 81.8 years, (20 + 61.8). It takes a little bit of getting your head around the fact that the older you are the higher your life expectancy. To put it as simply as possible, the older you are, the more of the people who didn’t make it are removed from your own calculation of expectancy, so the greater the chance you will be one of those who lives to an above average age.
