Denis Irwin’s Soap Stars vs Campo’s Mambo Blancos

  • San Antonio Football Stadium, Friday 28th September 6.30pm

No less than 5 full international players from La Liga and The Premiership will be joined by a whole host of Soap Stars for a special Jet2 vs Mambo charity football match on Friday 28th of September.

Entrance is 5€ for adults with children free. And all money raised goes to Ibiza’s charity for disabled children, Apneef.

For Jet2, Manchester United and Ireland defender Denis Irwin has the interesting challenge of leading out a pan-channel-soap team. Corrie and Hollyoaks are out in force with an odd Eastender giving some Southern representation.

Irwin will be applying all the skills and experience of a career in which he won 19 major trophies, and had Alex Ferguson describe him as ‘pound for pound the best signing I ever made’.

In his acting stable he has Andy Whyment, Coronation Street’s ‘Kirky’ along with Dean Fagan who plays ‘Luke Britton’, Alan Halsall, who plays ‘Tyrone Dobbs’ and Sam Aston, known by millions thrice weekly as ‘Chesney Brown’.

Among the Hollyoaks half dozen there is Anthony Quinlan who plays ‘Gilly’ in Hollyoaks and also ‘Pete Barton’ in Emmerdale. Plus Ashley Taylor Dawson, who is ‘Darren Osborne’ in Hollyoaks and also a 2013 ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant.

On paper at least, the opposing team Mambo look a daunting prospect for Irwin’s 11. No surprise to find a player from Mambo boss Javier’s beloved Blancos in the line up, with European Champion’s League winning Iván Campo. British fans may best remember Campo for his 40 yard wonder goal for Bolton v Spurs on the opening game of the season 2006.

Campo is one of two Ipswich Town players in the Mambo team. He is joined by Finidi George who made a name for himself with Ajax, another Champion’s league winner, and Nigeria. George also played for Real Betis and Mallorca in Spain.

Though the Ipswich pedigree alone is likely to be enough to beat any team of actors, Mambo have strength in depth if they need it. Vicente Engonga was one of the RCD Mallorca team that beat Barcelona in the 98 Supercup final. He has also had spells with Valencia and Real Valladolid. Also from that same era Mallorca under Héctor Cúper comes Gabriel Amato. Argentinian international Amato later went on to play for Glasgow Rangers.

All in all we can’t help thinking that Denis will be glad of his goalkeeper’s pedigree. Jet2 have Nick Culkin, Manchester United’s number 2 to Peter Schmeichel, between the sticks.

Editorial Comment

I make no apology for the unjustified prominence of references to Ipswich Town Football Club, nor for using images of players during their spell at Ipswich Town Football Club, despite the fact that for both players their time at Ipswich Town Football Club was the least noteworthy period of their playing career.

I would point out that opportunities to shoehorn mentions of Ipswich Town Football Club into the pages of an Ibiza newspaper are few and far between, and as such must be exploited to their maximum potential as and when they arise.

With this in mind I will indulge your patience further with the Ipswich Town Football Club chant for Finidi George.

To the tune of Dean Martin’s ‘Volare’

Finidi, oh oh oh oh,

Finidi, oh oh oh oh,

He comes from Africa,

He drives a big tractor,

Finidi, oh oh oh oh,

(sorry about that, we’re bottom of the league you know)
