La Skimal Photographs
ME by Meliá
Ibiza photographer La Skimal, aka Isabel Flores, has her first retrospective exhibition in Ibiza, entitled ‘Intuition: Ibiza through La Skimal’ (Intuición: Ibiza a través de La Skimal). Opening on June 14 you will be able to see her personal view of Ibiza through her photography.
Portrait of Ibiza
She invites you to accompany her in her unique portrait of Ibiza over the past 15 years, from different prisms: the natural environment that surrounded her when she was growing up, the music and club culture and the essence and idiosyncrasies the people and characters that inhabit the island, including herself.
“For me photographs are experiences, and I try to express myself with them with honesty, love, and audacity. It’s my way of life, my way of interpreting and confronting the reality.” Isabel Flores.
Music Scene Photography
Some of the photos on display are of great figures of the international music scene and club culture, such as Lenny Kravitz, Lady Gaga, Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Faithless, The Prodigy, Luciano, Rudimental and DJ Harvey. Also, for the first time photography will be transformed into music, thanks to the pioneering system of Musical Vision, a technology used for the blind.
Amongst her personal projects, La Skimal was the in-house photographer at Ibiza Rocks for many years and also takes photos for Essential Ibiza and other local organisations.
The opening is on Friday June 14 at 7pm, with music from DJ Oliver. It is on display until June 21 at ME Ibiza, Avinguda de s’Argamassa, 153, 07849 Ibiza.
La Nave Salinas
La Nave Salinas reopens its doors for the summer on Saturday June 15 with a large-scale exhibition of recent work from American artist Kenny Scharf entitled ‘Universalis’. Kenny Scharf is the inventor of American Pop Surrealism and one of the great living legends of the 80s New York art scene. He was prominent in the East Village art scene during the 80s alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Commissioned by art collector and founder of La Nave Salinas Lio Malca, this is the first solo exhibition of Kenny Scharf in Spain for more than two decades.
Born in Hollywood in 1958 and submerged in the aesthetics of the 50s and 60s, television, advertising and early cartoons, Scharf was provided with much aesthetic material during his childhood. Years later, after settling in New York, he would combine his interest in the underground comic and graffiti scene with the inspirational and decadent life of the 80s in the East Village, the legend of Andy Warhol and his Factory, and much more. All of that would bring him closer to Pop and Surrealism when developing the imaginative and creative force of his work.
The works in the exhibition, will allow us to approach and enjoy the creative universe of Kenny Scharf. An iconoclastic portraitist of emotions, Scharf will offer the viewer the opportunity to enter a magical and impressive space that will open their senses and to enjoy, from a different point of view, the hyperbolic style, debtor of cartoons and comics, of this fundamental artist.
“Most people think that art only belongs on a wall in a gallery or a museum. I think it should be everywhere.” Kenny Scharf
From June 15 to September 30, 2019. Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10.00 am – 10.00 pm. Free Admission. La Nave Salinas is at Carrer La Canal 2 12-13, Salinas, which is between the end of the beach and where the salt is loaded onto the boats.
Art Projects Ibiza + Lune Rouge
The summer exhibition at Art Projects Ibiza + Lune Rouge opens on June 17 with new work from British artist Tracey Emin. ‘An Insane Desire for You’ exposes explicit yet subtle and mysterious nuances regarding the female body, power, and desire. Emin’s works make as powerful a statement in contemporary society today as they did when she first started addressing and unveiling these topics.
Xavier Hufkens Colab
In collaboration with Xavier Hufkens, the exhibition is installed in both spaces and is comprised of 24 new artworks, including paintings, works on paper and neon. Fueled with sexual eroticism and unresolved desire, Emin questions fundamental ideas of love, loss and affection.
Text in Art
Throughout the exhibition the artist has used text, whether in neon or painted directly onto the canvas. The use of text on the paintings is unapologetic, gestural and applied with immediacy, the words employed evoke desperation as the densely worked layers of paint drip violently down the canvas. Denoting a certain vulnerability, this new body of work is both tender and nostalgic, yet powerfully sexual.
“An Insane Desire For You” glows brightly in neon at the entrance to both spaces. Visible from the street, the soft pink and red hues catch the attention of the people passing by, setting a tone for the rest of the exhibition.
The exhibition is on view until October 1st, 2019. Free entrance. Art Projects Ibiza + Lune Rouge is at Alcalde Bartomeu Rosselló Sala, 7-9B (just up from Ikea), in Ibiza Town.
