Ibiza is to get its first Aldi supermarket. The international chain will open its new store in Figueretes on the outskirts of Ibiza Town on the 5th of April.
Originally a German company, Aldi is now composed of two large business groups : ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd, with presence in Europe, North America and Australia. In the case of Spain, ALDI Supermercados belongs to the ALDI Nord group, which has over 50,000 employees across its network in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, France and Portugal.
The Ibiza opening will create 22 jobs, though as with all development of corporate retail business there will be concerns as to the long term effect on the survival of independent local businesses. For the benefit of our UK readers – whereas the independent neighbourhood greengrocer, butcher, hardware store etc is largely extinct in British towns and cities, Ibiza still maintains a good number of these often family run businesses. In the last 5 years however, the island has seen a big increase in the number of international supermarket brands.
Aldi will be open every day from 9am to 9.30pm. On the opening day April 5th customers will be gifted a bag and some ‘essential larder provisions’, along with the opportunity to sample some of the Aldi chefs creations.
